What Camera Does PewDiePie Use?

PewDiePie is the undisputed king of content creators on YouTube. With over 102 million loyal subscribers in the Bro army, he’s a beacon of inspiration for amateur YouTubers everywhere – but what camera does he use? I’ve done the research to find out so that you don’t have to!

What camera does PewDiePie use? PewDiePue uses the Canon XA11 Professional Camcorder as his main recording camera, according to his latest setup tour. This professional-grade camera sits behind the central monitor in his 3-monitor setup and is used to record his daily videos. When PewDiePie is vlogging on the go, he switches to the Canon PowerShot G7X Mark II.

But why did he choose the Canon XA11 over all the cameras on the market? And why is the camera quality on his videos so notoriously bad? Let’s find out.

PewDiePie’s Main Recording Camera

Canon XA11 Professional Camcorder

PewDiePie’s main recording camera, the Canon XA11, is every bit as good as you’d expect from the most-subscribed YouTuber of all time (excluding T-series, but who cares about them?). It boasts some really great features, including:

  • A 20x high-definition optical zoom lens
  • Advanced HD CMOS Pro image sensor
  • Excellent low-light performance
  • 1920×1080 HD recording resolution
  • Intelligent stabilization system
  • Flip-screen

The intelligent stabilization system, in particular, is one of my favourite features. It automatically selects the right image stabilization option to reduce blurry images, while the eight-bladed circular aperture makes the out-of-focus areas of the shot look better.

All of that combines together in the XA11 to create some really high-quality, crisp footage. t’s surprisingly compact too, which is important if you’re just producing videos in your room without a production rig or camera crew. In fact, the HD CMOS Pro is one of the most advanced sensors you’ll find anywhere on a camcorder this small.

The only thing that’s a little surprising about the XA11 is that it doesn’t record in 4K – output files are limited to 1080p format. That explains why PewDiePie never uploads any videos in 4K and sticks to 1080p or 720p videos.

At first, I wondered why he wouldn’t choose a camera with 4K recording capabilities, but I guess it makes sense. He knows that most viewers struggle to download videos in 4K without buffering, plus 4K takes a lot longer to upload to YouTube, so 1080p just makes more sense. Plus, he’s not exactly creating 4K cinematic videos, so an ultra-HD quality isn’t really necessary.

PewDiePie’s Vlog Camera

Alright, let’s move on and talk about PewDiePie’s vlogging camera, the Canon PowerShot G7X Mark II. This is the camera uses when he’s on the move and creating travel vlogs (does anyone remember Birdabo?). He used it to vlog his trips to Singapore, Japan, and Malaysia.

So what’s so great about the Canon PowerShot G7X? Well, a lot of things. There’s a reason this is probably the most popular camera choice for travel vloggers.

For one thing, it’s a pocket-sized, large sensor compact camera. This makes it a lot more suitable for on-the-go shooting than the bulky camcorder he uses in his main setup. The tilt flip screen is also very useful; you can see yourself while you’re recording and tilt it in various angles to allow you to get more creative with your shots.

The low light performance is excellent, the image stabilizer allows for beautifully crisp stills and steady panning shots while you’re on the move, and the sharp focus allows you to easily produce cinematic focus pulls using the touch screen.

Like the XA11, it’s limited to 1080p at 60fps, which is all PewDiePie needs. Overall, it’s a pretty great camera that I’d recommend to anyone recording footage out of the studio.

What’s With PewDiePie’s Camera Quality?

If you’re a follower of PewDiePie, you’ll know that the poor camera quality in his videos is somewhat of a running joke amongst the Bros. But the Canon XA11 is actually pretty good – so what gives?

Well, no one’s exactly sure – certainly not PewDiePie himself, but it’s likely that it’s not the camera’s fault. Most people seem to think it’s one of three issues that’s causing the problem: lighting, editing, or software.

PewDiePie seems to think the quality gets lost somewhere during the editing process. He has said, “I wouldn’t say my editing is bad but somehow I think the quality as it goes between us gets completely [messed up]”.

It might be editors Brad or Si being lazy and failing to download, export, and upload the footage PewDiePie sends them in the original full HD quality.

However, let’s not be too quick to throw the editors under the bus – it might not be their fault. It could be that the lighting in PewDiePie’s recording studio is poor, and the camera settings are affecting the low-light performance.

But probably the most likely cause of the problem is PewDiePie’s recording software. Rather than pulling footage directly from the camera’s SD card, it might be going through PewDiePie’s video capture software, like Elgato, first. The software might be messing up the quality of the footage as it captures it.

So like I said, it’s a bit of a mystery. Let’s just hope he fixes it soon!

How Much Does PewDiePie’s Camera Cost?

With an estimated net worth of around $30 million USD, PewDiePie isn’t short of a bob or two, so you’re probably thinking that his camera costs a fortune, right? Well, not really. I mean, it is a little pricy, but it’s not as expensive as you might think

PewDiePie’s camera actually costs around $1200 USD. This puts it firmly in the high-end camera price range, but it’s not totally unaffordable. If you’re serious about video making, it might be a worthwhile investment.

However, it’s not the only great camera out there. If the XA11 is a little out of your budget, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered.

Alternatives to PewDiePie’s Camera

Here are some alternatives to PewDiePie’s camera that won’t break the bank. All the cameras below will shoot footage in full 1080p HD and allow you to record YouTube videos at the same kind of quality as PewDiePie.

1. Canon VIXIA HF R800 Camcorder

This is another Canon camcorder with a fold-out touchscreen and excellent video stabilization. The HD footage is super clear and looks great, just like the XA11. It’s also a lot cheaper, at less than $250.

The only real drawback to the Vixia HF R800 is the audio. The internal mic quality isn’t great, so I’d recommend using an external mic with it if you go down this route.

2. Panasonic HC-V180K

If you’re not a fan of Canon cameras, check out this camcorder from Panasonic instead. The HC-V180K is a popular choice amongst YouTubers thanks to its super-sharp Full HD 1080p recording capability, 90x zoom, compact design, and low price point.

It has a nice flip screen so you can see yourself while you’re recording, decent image stabilization and low light performance, and a surprisingly good internal mic.

3. Ansteker 4K Camcorder

Unlike PewDiePie, some content creators actually want to shoot in 4K. If you’re one of them, check out this 4K Camcorder from Ansteker. It’s one of the best budget 4K camcorders on the market and only costs around $260.

The camera uses a 13 MP COMS sensor and records 4K ultra-HD footage. It comes equipped with a 3” LCD touch screen that can rotate up to 270 degrees, 16x digital zooms, and even has night vision. It’s a great choice if you really want 4K but you don’t have a big budget to spend.
